Nakamura Ward is said to be the birthplace of both Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the lowly foot soldier who rose to become supreme ruler of medieval Japan, and the famed warrior Kato Kiyomasa. A museum dedicated to the two historical heroes can be found to the west of Nakamura Park, while the Toyokuni Shrine dedicated to Hideyoshi is located in the center of the park. Nearby Arakogawa Park is famous for its lavender, while Nagoya’s oldest remaining building, a Buddhist tower dating from 1536, stands at Arako Kannon Temple. Within walking distance of Nagoya Station is the Endo-ji Shopping Arcade, Nagoya’s oldest remaining arcade preserving the atmosphere of post wartime Nagoya while adding a trendy modern feel.
