Osu & Kanayama Areas
Osu is Nagoya’s version of Tokyo’s Sugamo, Akihabara or Harajuku areas. Osu is a wonderland that attracts people of all ages and nationality. This is the site of the famed “World Cosplay Summit Parade” enjoyed by cosplayers from Japan and abroad, and the “Osu Daido Chonin Festival” celebrating the geisha courtesan parades of old. The Osu area has continued to change with the times, adapting to new customs, while retaining its heritage. It developed from being a temple town to an electrical goods town to an “otaku” and shopping town. Numerous temples and shrines line the many side streets of the Osu shopping arcades, including the many historical spots such as the eye-catching Osu Kannon Temple, and the mighty warlord Oda Nobunaga related Bansho-ji Temple where traditional Karakuri mechanical doll performances can be seen. The area is also popular for its wide variety of gourmet foods. Kanayama Sogo Station is another important hub where the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line, JR Chuo Main Line, Tokaido Main Line, Nagoya Municipal Subway Meijo Line and Meiko Line converge. Nagoya City is currently focusing on the development of Kanayama as a sub-center making it even more lively.
