  • Kitagawa Tamiji Retrospective: From Mexico to Japan, 130th Anniversary of Birth

This is the first retrospective of Kitagawa Tamiji (1894-1989) in about 30 years. Kitagawa Tamiji was active as a painter and art educator in Mexico in the 1920s and 1930s. After returning to Japan, he was active in the Western-style painting world, based in Tokyo and Aichi, and also took on the challenge of teaching art to children and creating murals. Through about 180 works and documents, including about 70 paintings, this exhibition reconsiders what Kitagawa learned in Mexico and continued to value after returning to Japan. This exhibition approaches the true image of Kitagawa Tamiji, who had many different sides to him, including as a Western-style painter, muralist, picture book creator, and art educator.
