An intro to Black Jack

Though an unlicensed medical practitioner, Black Jack has a knack for performing so-called impossible surgical procedures thanks to his uncanny medical genius, while asking for hefty payments in return for saving his patients' lives. Black Jack constantly questions what it is to be a doctor, the treasure that is life, and the balance between money and other important aspects of our lifestyles while at the same time exposing patients' fear of death and the egoism of mankind as he takes a stand against society itself.

The Black Jack manga ran in the magazine Weekly Shonen Champion (published by Akita Publishing) from November of 1973 to October of 1983. Tezuka, heralded as an all-in-one manga artist with 30 years in the industry, began the manga as a short story to appear only four times with all of Tezuka's characters, but due to popular demand thanks to the incredible story, 230 chapters were published in five years with the magazine being sold out each week. After serialization ended in 1978, 13 more stories were published, with Black Jack becoming one of Osamu Tezuka's most beloved and best-known works.
