Nagoya Sword World will hold a special exhibition, ""The Three Great Spears of Japan,"" from Saturday, March 22 to Sunday, June 1, 2025.
Our museum has been working on the ""Three Great Spears of Japan Replica Project,"" which aims to recreate the three most beautiful and famous spears in Japan, Tonbogiri, Otegine, and Nihon-go, using the skills of Japan's top swordsmiths. Five years after the project began, we will be exhibiting copies of the Three Great Spears of Japan made by the same swordsmith for the first time.
The swordsmith who created the copies of the Three Great Spears of Japan is Kohei Kamibayashi, who holds the highest rank of ""Mukansha"" for modern swordsmiths and is also a holder of Yamagata Prefecture's designated Important Intangible Cultural Property. In addition, the intricate engraving of the blade of Nihon-go was done by carver Muneju Yanagimura. This time, the copies of the Three Great Spears of Japan were completed by two modern swordsmiths and carvers with the highest skills in Japan.
Additionally, swords related to each spear and warlord will be on display. For Tonbogiri, swords from the Honda clan and copies of Honda Tadakatsu's armor will be on display, for Nihon-go, swords related to the Kuroda clan and swords with prominent blade engravings will be on display, and for Otegine, swords made by Yoshisuke and swords related to the Yuki clan will be on display.
