Sakuji Yoshimoto: The Journey of Painting YOHIMOTO Sakuji; Pictorial Pilgrimage
In the 1980s, as the exhibition format of installations that create space flourished in the field of art, a group of figurative paintings that weave ""stories"" on large screens appeared. Riding the flow of ""New Painting,"" an international trend that strongly impressed the ""revival of painting,"" painter Yoshi Sakuji (born in Gifu Prefecture in 1959) made a striking debut in Nagoya. He attracted attention with his large-scale works that feature powerful, undulating strokes (brushstrokes) and heavy textures, as well as contrasting graphical images and floating forms.
Since the 1990s, he has repeatedly drawn in search of new forms of expression, incorporating the element of ""lines"" from the brushwork of Chinese painting. He also focused on the themes and compositions of European paintings from the Renaissance onwards, and transformed his works into expressions that combine tranquility and dynamism and allegorical subjects. Since 2005, he has been a professor at Nagoya University of Arts, where he lectures on painting theory and trains the next generation in both theory and practical instruction.
Through a total of approximately 200 paintings and drawings, this exhibition introduces the artist's unique ""journey,"" which is indispensable for understanding the development of painting in Japanese contemporary art since the 1980s.
