The city of Nagoya is full of famous spots boasting a myriad of cherry blossoms—from those with early bloomers and blossoms blooming in a relay of succession to those counted among Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossoms Spots. Walk along paths lined with flowering cherry trees, capture the beauty with your camera, and just plain enjoy the spectacular scenery which comes but once every spring.

Nagoya City's early-blooming cherry blossoms

Okan Cherry Tree Road

Step out from Exit 2 of Takaoka Station on the Sakura-dori Subway Line, and a street lined with beautiful Okan cherry trees greets you. This is one of the earliest-blooming cherry blossom spots in Nagoya, and the nearly 130 trees of mostly Okan variety span a 1.4-km section along the road.

Flower viewing spots in Nagoya

Nagoya Castle

Some 900 cherry trees with approximately 10 varieties of mainly the Somei Yoshino and weeping kind bloom here with the weeping cherry blossoms first opening in late March and Somei Yoshinos reaching their peak nearly a week later. Next, around the middle of April, the Gyoiko variety shows its unusual green flowers. The cherry blossoms even become lit up with numerous events held during the Nagoya Castle Cherry Blossom Festival. Don't miss the spectacular scene of Nagoya Castle framed with these angelic blossoms available only during the spring season.

Meijo Park

This wide-open and expansive park is located around Nagoya Castle with an area of some 80 hectares. It is a popular spot in spring for its Yoshino cherry trees blossoming around a pond for a picturesque view together with Nagoya Castle. Enjoy a leisurely stroll as you take in a variety of different flowers blooming around the park throughout the four seasons. A lawn featuring a slightly elevated hill of flowers with a Dutch-style windmill transports you away to the Netherlands in its authenticity, making the spot a spectacular one not only for cherry blossoms but numerous other floral spring colors.

• Construction is occuring currently at various points around the park with some areas unavailable to the public. Work is being done in sequence, so see the official site beforehand on details regarding where it takes place.

Tokugawaen Japanese Garden

Tokugawaen is a Japanese garden designed around a pond and was once an estate of the powerful Owari Tokugawa family. Pass through the Black Gate and both sides of the path greet you with Tokai cherry blossoms. You can find a variety of cherry trees, including the beautiful flowers of weeping cherries, which makes for a spectacular collaboration between the floral pink hues and landscape of the Japanese garden. Be sure to visit and see these beautiful blossoms together with the simultaneously held Hina Doll Festival of the Owari Tokugawa Family.

Tsuruma Park

This is easily one of Nagoya's most prominent cherry blossom spots. The cherry tree grove located northeast of the famous fountain tower is designated one of Japan's Top 100 Famous Cherry Blossom Spots and sees an incredible number of visitors. Even after the cherry blossoms have met their peak, 1,400 roses of 140 varieties (blooming from late April to mid-June), approximately 20 thousand water irises of 90 varieties (blooming from around early June), 2,300 hydrangeas (blooming from early to late June), and other flowers take center stage around the park. From mid-March when the park's Cherry Blossom Festival is held, the trees continue to show their colors even into the night through brilliant illumination—with the nighttime cherry blossoms rivaling the daytime's beauty.

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens

This botanical garden's Cherry Blossom Passageway lined with 1,000 cherry trees of 100 varieties blooming one after another is an incredibly popular flower viewing spot. Early-blooming Kawazu cherry trees and the branches of weeping varieties strung with blossoms create a tunnel you can walk through with the fallen pedals carpeting it in colors of pink. Vibrant double-flowered types and the mysterious light green Gyoiko cherry blossoms too help to portray the stunning variety of flowers all blossoming in turn.
The zoo and botanical gardens are also famous for the chance they offer to take pictures of animals among the flowers—a chance only available in spring. From Saturday, April 5 to Sunday, April 13, the Evening Yae Cherry Blossom Walk is held. Certain areas of the botanical garden are open until 8:30 pm with a row of cherry blossoms hanging over the path like a hallway are illuminated. See these Yae cherry blossoms and their unmatched, unique elegence showcased in the night.

Yamazaki River

For 2.5 kilometers from Ishikawa Bridge to Ochiai Bridge along Mizuho Ward's Yamazaki River stand vividly blossoming cherry trees. The collection of trees is even designated one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossoms Spots, famous nationwide for its beauty. Located among a residential area, you can gaze upon the colors in a low-key setting perfect for a quite walk and photography. Go down to the river at various stops and rest on the benches available. Light displays illuminating the cherry blossoms are planned from late March to early April, 2025.

Shirotori Garden

This Japanese garden is one of the biggest in the Tokai region to be designed around a pond and portrays the geography of the larger Chubu region in which it sits through a manmade hill symbolizing Mt. Ontake, a stream depicting the Kiso River, and a pond illustrating the Ise Bay. It also offers a variety of cherry blossoms such as those blooming on variations of weeping cherry trees, mountain cherry trees, and more around the end of March. Walk just a bit further and you can also enjoy the Shirotori Promenade—a row of cherry blossoms along the Hori River path.

Shonai Ryokuchi Park

Cherry trees grow here and there throughout this expansive park. The Cherry Blossom Tunnel along the cycling course is of particular beauty with the trees' blossoms stretching almost as far as the eye can see. Within the Flower and Tree Garden too stand some 400 Somei Yoshino cherry trees and nine weeping cherries in the center, making it one of the most spectacular spots in the park.
During the Spring Flower Festival, food trucks and hands-on workshops are held for even more fun.

Arakogawa Park

On both banks of Arakogawa, or Arako River, lies the stunning sight of about a kilometer-long line of cherry trees and their blossoms. It is the perfect spot for a relaxing spring stroll. The Arakogawa Park Cherry Blossom Festival is also available from late March to early April with cherry blossom-inspired concerts, green markets, and other events for all ages to enjoy on weekends. During the festival's nights, the cherry blossoms are illuminated in a brilliant display.

Agricultural Park / Toda River Greenery Park

Toda River Greenery Park is a popular family destination, full of facilities for outdoor fun. Have fun on play equipment and an expansive yard, play mini golf, grill out at a BBQ, and enjoy educational fun at the science museum. From early March, around 1,000 Kawazu, Kanhi, Somei Yoshino, and Sato cherry trees bloom in succession. Plenty of fun events like a vegetable harvest experience and sketch competition are held during the Spring Story event.

Togokusan Fruits Park

Gaze upon weeping cherry blossoms as their pedals come fluttering down like a pink snow from the sky. The light pink blossoms strung on vertically drooping branches meet their peak season just as fruit trees around the park too come into bloom. The orchard takes on the colors of 17 fruit trees, such as Japanese and Western plums, almonds, pears, and apples as they begin to flower.
