What is Wagashi?

Wagashi are traditional Japanese sweets, known for their beautiful designs, natural ingredients, and delicate flavors. Often inspired by the seasons, they resemble small edible works of art that reflect Japan's appreciation for nature and aesthetics. Wagashi are not overly sweet, offering a subtle, refined taste that pairs perfectly with green tea. These treats are a unique way to experience Japanese culture and are often enjoyed during tea ceremonies, festivals, and special occasions.

Highlights of the Experience

In this special experience, you’ll create two distinct types of traditional Japanese sweets, known as wagashi.
First, you’ll make kimizhigure, a classic confection made with egg yolk. Its delicate surface cracks and moist yellow bean paste give it a unique look and flavor.
Next, you’ll craft three beautiful nerikiri sweets, each shaped to resemble a delicate flower. You’ll make a total of five pieces: two kimizhigure and three nerikiri.
This workshop is perfect for those who love wagashi but have never tried making it themselves.
While wagashi creation might seem challenging, our skilled instructor, Mr. Koie, will guide you through each step, sharing helpful tips and offering hands-on support so even beginners can enjoy the process.
Often called “edible art,” wagashi reflects Japan’s rich cultural heritage. As you immerse yourself in this tradition, you’ll experience the joy of creating something beautiful, delicious, and deeply meaningful. Start the New Year with this artistic and delightful journey into Japanese culture!
